Access to Electronic Consumer Health Information Project Award
The purpose of this outreach initiative is to ensure that health professionals, their patients and the general public are connected to the health information resources they need to make informed health care decisions.

The Center for Development and Disability, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, Albuquerque, NM
Project: Access to Electronic Consumer Health Informaion: Consumer Health Information Project
This project seks to increase the knowledge and use of currently available electronic health information and disability resources for health professionals, families and consumers through a series of hands on trainings focusing on specific databases provided by the National Library of Medicine, The Center for Development and Disability, the University of New Mexico and other specialized health related organizations. The project's target population includes family specialists, consumers and families that have children with developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder. Regional Family Specialists will identify local parent networks to participate in training sessions.
Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library, Houston, TX
Project: The Vietnamese Civic Center – Consumer Health Collaborative.
Building on an earlier Consumer Health Information for Asians project, the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library will work in collaboration with the Vietnamese Civic Center (VNCC) to create a health library in the VNCC's new facility giving the Vietnamese population of Houston greater access to much needed health information. A computer with Internet access will be placed in the VNCC library specifically for the purpose of searching for health information in Vietnamese, using MedlinePlus’s Multiple Languages and NLM’s Asian-American Health website, among other online resources. Additionally, training will be provided to the staff and clients of the VNCC.
Edgewood Family Network, San Antonio, TX
Project: TECNO: Technology-Enhanced Community Neighborhood Organization
The TECNO project will use an existing cadre of youth to provide consultations on information technology and health information to families residing in a high-priority, predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in San Antonio, TX. The goal is to raise awareness among the neighborhood residents of low-cost and free options for computer hardware, Internet access, and health information; raise awareness among minority youth of career opportunities in the health professions; and raise awareness among members of San Antonio’s city council of the need to foster access to computers with Internet access for residents of high priority neighborhoods in San Antonio.
Year 02 (2007-2008)
Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library, Houston, TX The project, South Central Houston Community Health Information Center, will facilitate access to electronic consumer health information at the South Central Houston Community Health Center’s Riverside Clinic facility, a location which provides preventive and primary care services to medically underserved communities in the southeast area of Houston. The goal of the program is to create an Internet-connected health information center at the Riverside Clinic facility and to provide training regarding use of electronic health information resources to both clinic staff members and clinic clientele.
Year 1 (2006-2007)
US Public Health Service Santa Fe Indian Hospital, Santa Fe, NM This project, Access to Electronic Consumer Health Information, will address access to Internet-based consumer health information for American Indian populations and awareness of evidence-based literature for paraprofessionals working with rural and urban American Indian populations. The principal investigators will provide practical training sessions through mobile laptop technology and Treo SmartPhones to health care paraprofessionals and urban American Indian consumers. Cherokee Nation, Tahlequah, OK In their project, Cherokee Health Information Network for Clinics, the Cherokee Nation plans to place computers with Internet access to MedlinePlus, PubMed and other National Library of Medicine (NLM) products in the waiting room of clinics. They will work with their partner, the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Library, Tulsa, to train the clinic staff to assist patients wanting to use the computer to search for health information.
DOCLINE Library Improvement Project Award
The purpose of this award is to provide an opportunity to DOCLINE libraries, or libraries that are interested in becoming full DOCLINE users, to expand and improve existing library services.

St. Edward Mercy Medical Center, Fort Smith, AR The Parish Nurses Promoting Health Information Literacy to Non-English Speaking Hispanic Community project will improve access to health information for the Hispanic community of Fort Smith, AR by providing education related to healthy lifestyles taught by parish nurses and bilingual interpreters at the Immaculate Conception Church. Southeastern Louisiana Area Health Education Center Learning Resource Center, Slidell, LA The WISER Responders project will use PDAs to introduce NLM’s WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) resources to first responders attending FARMEDIC classes. Pawhuska Literacy Council, Pawhuska, OK The Health Access in Osage County project aims to make available understandable health information for the older adults in Osage County through educational sessions at area churches, nutrition sites and/or senior citizen centers. Oklahoma State University Medical Center, Tulsa OK The Patient Information Kiosk project will serve to provide patients and family members at the Medical Center with 24-hour access to MedlinePlus and other web-based consumer health information resources. University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fort Worth, TX The goal of the Health Literacy Education Initiative (HLEI) project is to improve patient health literacy while enhancing the patient education skills of students in a physician assistant program. The project will utilize MedlinePlus to instruct students in the best practices and techniques for effectively communicating with patients concerning their medical status. Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library, Houston, TX The goal of the Information Rx for School Nurses and Librarians: MedlinePlus and Go Local project is to promote MedlinePlus and Go Local Texas Gulf Coast to school nurses and school librarians in the Gulf Coast region.

Library Technology Award
The purpose of the Library Technology Award is to assist full Network member libraries that are interested in implementing large-scale technology applications to further encourage library improvement and expansion of library services.
Year 03 (2008-2009)
Ochsner Health System Medical Library & Archives, New Orleans, LA The focus of this project is to perform digital preservation of selected materials from archives of the Ochsner Medical Library & Archives. Digitization will prevent deterioration and improve access by enabling easier distribution and access from multiple locations. Materials will be digitized externally, and Ochsner librarians will create a web interface that brings these materials to the public, documenting over 80 years of medical history in New Orleans. Texas A&M University, College Station, TX and Oklahoma State University Library, Tulsa, OK This project is a collaborative effort between Texas A&M Medical Sciences Library and Oklahoma State University Library to digitize the Index-Catalogue of Medical and Veterinary Zoology, which will greatly increase accessibility to its contents.The finished product will reside in the institutional repositories of both institutions to ensure availability and long-term preservation.

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Medical Library, Shreveport, LA This technology project has the dual purpose of improving interlibrary loan services and the library’s digitization/preservation programs. Both components will be addressed by the acquisition of a modern face-up document scanner.

Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) Library, Alexandria, LA The awarded project will enable VISN 16 (VAMC) librarians, who are collaborating to meet the goal of the National Library of Medicine program to increase electronic document delivery to improve access, convenience and delivery of up-to-date knowledge-based information to health care professionals, allied health professionals, educators, and students within VISN 16 and nationwide through VALNET. Ariel will be implemented in VISN 16 libraries in Little Rock, AR, North Little Rock, AR, Shreveport, LA, and Houston, TX.
Mobile Health Education Project
The purpose of this award is to provide equipment for a Network Member to advance health information outreach by utilizing mobile technologies.

Santa Fe Indian Hospital, Santa Fe, NM
Project title: Improving women’s health education in rural New Mexico American Indian Tribes
Project Summary: This proposal will extend previous efforts focused on improving American Indian Tribal communities access to medical care and consumer health information through installation of technology and mobile, wireless services and devices. The specific focus of this effort will be women’s health including breast and cervical health. Results from previous research have shown improvement in early breast cancer screening and compliance with screening appointments. The proposed effort will continue to deliver electronic health (eHealth) information for American Indian women to make informed decisions on their health promotion, disease prevention and improve their health screening appointment compliance rates.

Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, Waco, TX The project, Impact of a Group Training Session on Utilization of the Internet for Health Related Information: a Pilot Study Among Adult Consumers, offers interactive training sessions on MedlinePlus and NLM databases at nine outpatient clinics located within 50 miles of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. Follow-up surveys will provide information on the success of such training on 1) increasing use of the Internet for health related searches; 2) improvement of results of health searches on the Internet; and 3) whether or not participants feel more prepared to discuss health issues with their physician.
Partners in Public Health Information Outreach Award

St. Edward Mercy Medical Center Library, Ft. Smith, AR The project, Communication and Education: Equipping the Community to Fight CA-MRSA, will bring CA-MRSA information and general health information seeking skills to public health workers, healthcare professionals, school personnel and consumers in the Ft. Smith, AR area by providing teaching and training expertise using improved health information seeking skills. During the education sessions, attendees will be shown internet searching techniques to find reliable and authoritative healthcare information using NLM electronic health information products including PubMed, MedlinePlus, Clinicaltrials.gov, ToxTown and PHPartners.org. University of Oklahoma-Tulsa Schusterman Center Library, Tulsa, OK
Project Title: Building Dynamic Partnerships in Public Health: Using Wiki Technology to Connect the Tulsa Public Health Workforce with National Library of Medicine Resources
The primary emphasis of this project is to educate local public health agencies in the use of Web 2.0 technology and to develop a full-featured wiki platform for their use. The library will identify and partner with agencies and individuals contributing to the health and welfare of Tulsa and assist them in developing wikis for the purposes of project management, user education and information delivery. Librarians will construct subject-based webliographies for the wikis as well, including significant surface and deep links to NLM.

University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health, Houston, TX
Project title: Turning Evidence Into Practice: A Pilot Project to Develop New Training and Research Tools for the Public Health Workforce
This project will provide desktop training to Texas public health practitioners throughout Southeast Texas. Instruction will emphasize the use of evidence based research and guidelines to improve development and implementation of health programs and policies. Project activities will include: development of a website linking to evidence based websites, data sets, and journals and databases; a four-week synchronous distance education course; and three standalone webinars that will be open to all public health workers in Texas.
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Library, San Antonio, TX
Project Title: SMILE: Sharing MedlinePlus/MEDLINE for Information Literacy Education, a Dental Public Health Information Project
This project will focus on improving public health dental practitioners’ access to information resources, heightening their awareness of resources available from NLM, and integrating the best evidence from these resources as part of public health dental practice. The project will provide PubMed and Loansome Doc training for dentists and dental hygienists who staff community dental clinics. The project will also provide MedlinePlus training for dental practitioners and community health workers (promotores) who provide public health preventive care and oral health education. The Library also proposes to create a new topic page for PHPartners.org that focuses on public health dentistry.

Project title: New Mexico Partners in Public Health
The overall goal of this project is to increase knowledge and use of NLM health information and disability resources by the Sandoval County’s Public Health workforce, the Pueblo’s Community Health Representatives, and Pueblo Family Support Center Resource Specialists in Sandoval County New Mexico. Objectives will be accomplished through community outreach, internet based trainings and follow up technical assistance. The project will be a collaborative partnership between The Center for Development and Disability (CDD), Library and Information Network for the Community (LINC), Pueblo Connections Family support 360 Project, the New Mexico Health Science Library and Information Center (HSLIC), Sandoval County public health agency, and seven Pueblo communities.

The purpose of this award is to empower individuals at NN/LM SCR Network member institutions who are interested in expanding professional knowledge and experience to provide better health information access to health care professionals and consumers.

Symposium Title: Informing the Health and Future of K-12 Students
This symposium is an opportunity for school librarians, school nurses and others to raise their awareness of information resources available from NLM and other organizations. It also provides participants with an opportunity to work together in small groups to generate ideas for promoting access to health information for students, their families and the broader community.
