Small Business Grants (SBIRs & STTRs)

Small Business Innovation Research Grants (SBIRs) and Small Business Technology Transfer Research Grants (STTRs) play an important role in promoting the application of new scientific knowledge to the prevention and treatment of drug abuse.

To be eligible for small business grants, the business must meet size and other criteria stipulated by the Small Business Administration http://www.sba.gov/size/. For SBIR grants, 67% or more research or analysis must be conducted at the small business. For STTR grants, at least 40% must be done by the small business, and 30% or more done at the research institution (e.g., university). In addition, principal investigators must be employed in that small business at least 51% time for SBIRs, and 10% for STTRs.

Annually, NIDA participates in the NIH solicitation of proposals for contracts and SBIR/STTR omnibus solicitation of proposals for grants. These sources offer guidance for applicants on topics of high interest to NIDA.
