Regional Information Resources: New Mexico
Nicknamed "The Land of Enchantment," New Mexico has an area of 121,666 square miles. This land is diverse with mountains, deserts and densely forested areas, and large portions of it are deemed national parks and monuments.
The state's relatively small population was estimated in 2006 as 1,954,599. More than one-third of the nation's Navajo population resides here. There are 22 Indian tribes in the state, and Native Americans constitute over 10% of New Mexico's population. Nineteen pueblos are located in seven counties throughout the state. A third of the state's total population resides in its three largest cities: Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and the state capitol, Santa Fe. New Mexico became a territory in 1850 and did not become a state until 1912. The state was named by the Spanish who explored the area in search of a "new" Mexico.
