2008 National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month Press Conference and Kick-Off - SAMHSA-Sponsored
Description
The Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will unveil the results of the 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health at a press conference on Thursday, September 4. The annual survey, formerly called the Household Survey is the largest of its kind, and is the governments primary vehicle for determining how many persons are abusing illegal drugs, pharmaceuticals, alcohol and tobacco.

The release of the 2007 survey results is the keynote of the annual National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month press conference marking a month long observance of the gains made by those in recovery from alcohol and drug abuse, as well as treatment providers.

Description
Professional Ethics and Boundaries for AOD Professionals (3.0 CE Hours)

Workshop Description and Objectives:
1. Participants will explore unique considerations for the addictions professional, such as credentials, level of experience, discrimination, and issues of a counselor in relapse.
2. Counselors will examine competence in the areas of limits, dual diagnosis, responsibilities of patients and professionals and professional development.
3. The topic of rights of patients will include confidentiality, evaluating success and the myth of choice.
4. Participants will get to examine issues involving exploitation to include issues of publicity and social contacts with patients.
5. Participants will also get the opportunity to explore the ethics involving obligations to colleagues.
6. Examining how boundary issues complicate ethics.

Note: This Workshop meets the SCAADAC/NAADAC Ethics
Requirements for initial Certification.

Workshop Description and Objectives:
Principles of ASAM will be examined through small group exercises and discussion focusing on the six dimensions and patient placement criteria. Additionally, emphasis will be placed on the Prochaska and Diclemete Stages of Change model (motivational interviewing) as a way to enhance treatment effectiveness and to engage the client as a participant in the treatment process.

Lawrence Wiseburn is a licensed social worker and NAADAC certified Master Addiction Counselor. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Air Force Academy and Master of Social Work degree from the University of South Carolina. Lawrence is currently the clinical supervisor at Starting Point of Florence and Executive Director of Faces and Voices of Recovery Pee Dee. He is a member of the Board of Faces and Voices of Recovery South Carolina, Open Arms Recovery Center and the Circle Park Advisory Board. Lawrence is co-author of the current ASAM system for Medicaid utilization review for the State of South Carolina.
