Pelosi Statement on 45th Anniversary of the March on Washington
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the 45th anniversary of the March on Washington, led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on August 28, 1963:
"On the 45th anniversary of the March on Washington, we honor the unwavering determination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the more than 250,000 Americans who came to their nation’s capital to call for an end to discriminatory laws and practices. We pay tribute to their bravery, their commitment, and their wisdom.
"It is fitting that today, on the anniversary of this historic march, Senator Barack Obama will give an historic speech tonight in front of more than 75,000 Americans to accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States –the first time an African American has been nominated for the nation’s highest office by a major political party. Senator Obama has a vision of the future that is free from the constraints of the tired policies of the past – a vision that is new and bold and calls forth the best in the American people.
"As the nomination of Senator Obama demonstrates, we must continue to build a country of opportunity where all people have the chance to realize their God-given potential. We must build a country where we all stand united. And we must ensure that every citizen has the right to vote, and that every vote is counted."
