Your Life is Your Message

“The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.”

--- William James

Alexa Posny, Ph.D. Kansas Commissioner of EducationDear Retiring Educators,
As Commissioner of Education for the great state of Kansas, I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to each of you on your retirement after devoting your life to education.  Many of your colleagues, board members, students and parents have sung your praises about the value you have added to the field of education and most importantly, to them personally.

Please know that each of you have been a role model for me, as a great teacher or leader.  This is some of what you have taught me, and what I have learned:

“Today a reader—tomorrow a leader.”  You taught me that knowledge is power.

“There is no security on this earth—only opportunity.”  You taught me that life doesn’t offer lasting security, but it does offer trials, challenges and a whole lot of opportunity.

“A man or woman who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his or her back on the crowd.”  You taught me that a great educator must remain focused and be willing to stand alone; the goal is to lead the orchestra with excellence; the applause is a by-product."

As far back as the 3rd century BC, the Greek philosopher Diogenes said that the “foundation of every state is the education of its youth.”  You have dedicated your life to educate the children and youth in Kansas.  You had the patience to stay true to the task, you used your skill to bring order to the confusion, and your kind and understanding heart saw all children as capable and worthy.  Your passion for educating children, your genius for inspiring children to learn, and your willingness to open yourself to learning from your students means you are truly a saint of education.

This is also an exciting time in your life!  As I am sure you are aware, and are in fact anticipating, many things are about to change.  Daily routines, lifestyles, priorities and obligations may change, but one thing that I know won’t change is your commitment to your schools.  On behalf of the entire state, I would like to thank you for your dedication to the field of education and to the development of our most precious resource—the students in this state.

You have truly made your days count, rather than merely counted your days.  Congratulations on your retirement and best wishes for the future!

           With warm regards,
