Know Your Stimulus

Friday, May 8th, 2009

The ALA Washington Office has created a short overview screencast detailing potential areas for library funding available in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The overview is really good covering all kinds of libraries, including health sciences libraries. They have also compiled a list of the programs that libraries can benefit from that are included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. More information will be posted on each section as it becomes available. http://www.ala.org/knowyourstimulus

NIH also has a page covering grants funded by the stimulus package. It’s not focused on libraries but libraries may have a role in the projects that are being funded. http://grants.nih.gov/recovery/ /ch

Funding for Preservation and Archiving

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Were you inspired by the archivists who presented in our March 2009 Breezing Along with the RML? The National Endowment for the Humanities offers Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions. The deadline (May 14) is coming up too soon for this year, but now is a good time to review the requirements and start organizing a proposal. This grant is offered annually. http://neh.gov/grants/grants.html /ch

National Library of Medicine Grant Link http://www.nlm.nih.gov/ep/challenge.html
NIH has received new funds for Fiscal Years 2009 and 2010 as part of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act), Pub. L. No. 111-5. The NIH has designated at least $200 million in FYs 2009 - 2010 for a new initiative called the NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research. http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/challenge_award/

This new program will support research on topic areas that address specific scientific and health research challenges in biomedical and behavioral research that would benefit from significant 2-year jumpstart funds. The NIH has identified a range of Challenge Areas that focus on specific knowledge gaps, scientific opportunities, new technologies, data generation, or research methods that would benefit from an influx of funds to quickly advance the area in significant ways. Each NIH Institute, Center, and Office has selected specific Challenge Topics within the broad Challenge Areas related to its mission. The research in these Challenge Areas should have a high impact in biomedical or behavioral science and/or public health. The application due date is April 27, 2009. [scb]
