The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) stroke elimination intiative targets African American residents of Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, and Orangeburg counties in South Carolina. Among the collaborative partners in the project are: the American Heart/American Stroke Association; Angels of Mercy Mobile Outreach; Black River Healthcare, Inc.; MUSC’s Public Information and Community Outreach group; the Palmetto Project; St. George Medical Center; South Carolina African American Tobacco Control Network; Value Medical, Inc.; and various churches throughout the counties. The American Heart/American Stroke Association collaborates with MUSC on public awareness campaigns during Stroke Awareness Month. Angels of Mercy Mobile Outreach targets individuals with hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol and conducts screenings to determine if risk factors for stroke are controlled. Participants are referred to follow-up medical care as appropriate. Black River Healthcare, Inc. conducts blood pressure screenings and educational activities regarding stroke risk factors. The MUSC’s Public Information and Community Outreach Group assists with planning and executing television educational programs on stroke and high blood pressure and an annual statewide stroke summit. The Palmetto Project conducts blood pressure checks, stroke education, health fairs, and trainings. St. George Medical Center accepts project referrals and provides care to underserved and uninsured populations. The South Carolina African American Tobacco Control Network participates in health fairs, health forums, and workshops, and educates the community about tobacco as a risk factor for stroke. Value Medical, Inc. also conducts blood pressure screenings and educational forums. |
