HIV/AIDS Community Information Outreach Projects 2009

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce the solicitation of quotations from organizations and libraries to design and conduct projects that will improve access to HIV/AIDS related health information for patients, the affected community, and their caregivers.

Projects must involve  one or more of the following information access categories:
•    Information retrieval
•    Skills development
•    State-of-the-art resources
•    Resource development
•    Document Access.

Emphasis is placed upon the following types of organizations or arrangements for developing these programs:
•    Community-based organizations (CBOs) or patient advocacy groups currently providing HIV/AIDS related serves to the affected community
•    Public libraries serving communities in the provision of HIV/AIDS-related information and resources
•    Health departments or other local, municipal, or state agencies working to improve public health
•    Faith-based organizations currently providing HIV/AIDS-related services
•    Multi-type consortia of the above-listed organizations that may be in existence or formed specifically for this project.

Standard Awards are offered for up to $60,000;  Express Awards are offered for up to $10,000.

Quotations are due to NLM on Monday, June 1, 2009.

Students and Science Educators Get Boost from NIH ARRA Initiative
Investigators and institutions that already have research grants funded by NIH will be able to apply for administrative supplements from ARRA funds to support summer students and science educators. This additional money will not only promote job creation, economic development, and accelerate the pace and achievement of scientific research, it will encourage students to pursue research careers in health-related sciences, as well as provide elementary, middle and high school, and college-level science educators with short-term research experiences in NIH-funded laboratories. NIH will extend funding to those projects best able to provide meaningful research experiences for students and educators. These supplements are part of the $10.4 billion provided to NIH under ARRA. NIH’s “We Can!” Partners with Subway Restaraunts to Expand Movement to Prevent Childhood Obesity
The National Institutes of Health’s We Can! program has partnered with Subway Restaurants to reach families throughout the United States and beyond with practical tips and tools to help children and their parents maintain a healthy weight and prevent overweight and obesity. The NIH established We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition) in June 2005 to help prevent childhood obesity. The science-based national education program brings families and communities together to promote healthy weight in children ages 8 through 13 through improved food choices, increased physical activity, and reduced screen time.
