Justifiable homicides by police and citizens by circumstances, 1976-2005

Two line charts one for justifiable homicides by citizens and one for justfiable homicides by police officers. Each chart has five lines for attacked police, disrupted crime, fled or resisted, attacked citizen, or undetermined.

Justifiable homicides by citizens by circumstance

For justifiable homicides involving an attack on a police officer, the number began at 8 in 1976 and decreased to 1 in 1980. The number then increased to 13 in 1982, before falling to 1 in 1985. Then it rose to 11 in 1992, before decreasing to 2 in 1993. Then the number fluctuates with a high of 9 as it increases to 3 in 2005.

For justifiable homicides involving an attack on a citizen, the number began at 101 in 1976 and decreased to 80 in 1977. Then the number rose, reaching 153 in 1981, before falling to 44 in 1984. After 1984, it rose to 112 in 1992, before dropping to 46 in 2000. After 2000, the number fluctuates with a high of 95 as it increases to 91 in 2005.

For justifiable homicides where the felon fled, the number began at 11 in 1976 and decreased to 4 in 1977. Then the number rose to 20 in 1981, before decreasing to a low of 1 in 1991. After 1991, it increased to 6 in 1993, before decreasing to 1 in 1996. Then the number fluctuates with a high of 4 as it increases to 2 in 2005.

For justifiable homicides that resulted from a citizen disrupting a crime, the number began at 212 in 1976 and fell to 134 in 1977. Then the number rose to 329 in 1980, before falling, reaching 77 in 2005.

For justifiable homicides of undetermined circumstance, the number began at 49 in 1976 and decreased to 8 in 1978. Then the number rose to 37 in 1997, before decreasing, reaching 19 in 2000. After 2000, it increased to 31 in 2001, before decreasing to 19 in 2005.

Justifiable homicides by police by circumstance

For justifiable homicides involving an attack on a police officer, the number began at 124 in 1976 and rose to 285 in 1993. Then the number decreased to 191 in 2000, before increasing to 250 in 2004. Then it decreased to 222 in 2005.

For justifiable homicides involving an attack on a citizen, the number began at 4 in 1976 and remained constant until 1977. The number then increased, reaching a high of 14 in 1985, before decreasing to 4 in 1986. Then it increased, reaching 15 in 1989, before decreasing to 2 in 1995. After 1995, the number increased to a high of 8 in 2005.

For justifiable homicides where the felon fled or resisted arrest, the number began at 108 in 1976 and decreased to a low of 15 in 2000. After 2000, the number increased to 27 in 2003, before decreasing to 25 in 2004. It then increased to 27 in 2005.

For justifiable homicides that resulted from an officer disrupting a crime, the number began at 109 in 1976 and decreased to 67 in 1978. After 1978, the number rose to 133 in 1980, before decreasing to 43 in 2004. After 2004, it climbed to 53 in 2005.

For justifiable homicides of undetermined circumstance, the number began at 75 in 1976 and decreased to 22 in 1977. After 1977, the number rose, reaching a high of 66 in 1994, before falling to 29 in 1999. Then it increased to 49 in 2001, before decreasing to 33 in 2005.
