Face to Face with Toy Safety: Understanding an Unexpected Threat Charles W. Schmidt Abstract During 2007, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued more than 40 recalls for toys containing excessive levels of lead, most of them manufactured overseas. Lead-contaminated toys became one of the biggest environmental health stories of recent times, raising questions about the adequacy of safety testing—questions that had already been raised in relation to di-isononyl phthalate, a plasticizer used in soft children’s toys.
