Radical Departure: Polymerization Does More With Less Lance Frazer Abstract There are several different methods for producing plastic polymers. Engineers from Carnegie Mellon University have tweaked one of these methods, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) , and come up with a process that has potential benefits for production as well as environmental impact. This new process, dubbed ARGET (for “activators regenerated by electron transfer”) , reduces the amount of copper halide catalyst required for the process by up to a thousandfold and uses environmentally benign reducing agents such as ascorbic acid and glucose.
