Environmental Buyouts: Protection at a Price Scott Fields Abstract Purchasing environmentally significant land has become a favored way to protect such land from polluting activities such as mineral and oil extraction. Critics of such purchases argue from a number of positions, however, that buyouts are not usually the best way to protect endangered tracts of land, that they can interfere with market prices for land, and that they may encourage unscrupulous demand for future buyouts.
