The Quest for Fire: Hazards of a Daily Struggle John Manuel, Erin E. Dooley Abstract Biomass is the primary energy source for one-third of the world' people, but as a fuel, however, it can damage the environment and compromise the health of those who rely on it. Not only does biomass burning create emissions of a number of known and possibly toxic substances, but the gathering and transporting of it poses other health hazards. Programs in many countries are working to develop fuel-efficient, cleaner-burning stoves to help improve the health of the many who depend on this energy source.
