The Arkansas Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Libraries were established in the late 1970's. The six librarians comprised a very informal group that met quarterly. Around 1985 the group formed a consortium anticipating that some grants might be available for resource or collection development. More recently a seventh library was added with the formation of a Delta AHEC Center in eastern Arkansas. Members network, share resources and problem solve. Members meet quarterly for business and educational purposes.

The Baton Rouge Hospital Library Consortium is an organization that exists to foster professionalism, promote continuing education opportunities, develop cooperative relationships, encourage new uses of technology, and provide camaraderie for librarians. Membership is individual not corporate. The membership consists of eight librarians. The consortium has existed since at least 1985.

CLMLC was formed in 1997. There are six medical libraries which are full members and one ancillary member. CLMLC is dedicated to providing community-based training for health professionals, establishing technical assistance related to health care education, distributing information to health care providers and increasing and better utilizing the health information resources of Central Louisiana. The combined holdings of the Consortium are on the OPAC at http://www.clmlc.org. The Rapides Parish Library houses the consumer health collection and is the repository for the consortium server.

Health Sciences Library Association of Louisiana (HSLAL) is Louisiana's only state-wide association for health sciences librarians. The purpose of HSLAL is to encourage and promote cooperation and communication among colleagues of health sciences institutions in the state of Louisiana. HSLAL offers meetings, programs and continuing education courses within the state and in conjunction with the SCC/MLA Annual Meeting. HSLAL also offers an excellent opportunity for members to develop leadership skills through committee service.

The New Mexico Consortium of Biomedical and Hospital Libraries formed in 1980. Membership consists of 11 biomedical/hospital libraries and is open to any health related institution in the state of New Mexico that expresses intent to be a cooperating member and agrees to the Bylaws. Members meet quarterly for product demonstrations, roundtable discussions and Consortium business issues.

Oklahoma

GOAL stands for the Greater Oklahoma City Health Sciences Library Consortium that began in 1977. Membership consists of 17 medical libraries and is open to any health related institution in the state of Oklahoma that expresses intent to be a cooperating member and agrees to the Bylaws. Members meet for educational programs and share resources.

Health Libraries of Eastern Oklahoma

Health Libraries of Eastern Oklahoma (HeLEO) started in 2001. The purpose of HeLEO is to encourage resource sharing and information exchange, to provide a forum for professional development, and to promote interest in health science libraries. Membership consists of seven libraries with health science collections in northeastern Oklahoma. The membership meets at least twice a year.

OHSLA (Oklahoma Health Sciences Library Association) membership consists of health sciences library personnel within the state of Oklahoma. Associate membership is available for anyone interested in health sciences information. This organization began in 1978. The group usually has two meetings per year.

The Health Libraries Information Network (HealthLINE), is the consortium of health science librarians and libraries in the north central Texas area. About 60 individual members and 20 institutional member libraries participate, sharing resources through interlibrary loan. Quarterly meetings provide opportunities for professional development and interaction, sharing and learning about trends and technological advances in health science librarianship.

The South Central Academic Medical Libraries Consortium, known as SCAMeL, is a consortium of academic medical libraries whose directors comprise the Board of Directors. Its mission is to improve information services, library operations, and resource sharing in its member libraries in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

FreeShare

In addition to regional groups, there is a nationwide group of over 700 medical libraries whose sole purpose is to provide free interlibrary loan service to each other. This group, called FreeShare, began in 2000. More information is available at http://nnlm.gov/libinfo/docline/freeshare.html.
