NN/LM Emergency Preparedness and Response Toolkit
The primary mission for this toolkit is to promote disaster planning in health sciences libraries and to serve as a disaster planning resource for local communities and the nation.

Center for Disease Control and Prevention - Emergency Preparedness & Response
Getting prepared; types of emergencies including chemical, natural disasters, and disease; lab information; clinician resources; training and education.

Department of Veterans Affairs - The PILOTS Database
PILOTS is the largest interdisciplinary electronic resource on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental-health consequences of exposure to traumatic events. Includes information on assessment instruments used to measure trauma exposure and PTSD, mental health services after traumatic events and ethical and policy issues for traumatized populations.

DisasterAssistance.gov
Central, online location for all forms of federal disaster assistance. Register with FEMA and other federal agencies, redirect Social Security benefits to new address, access federal student loan account information.

FEMA - Federal Emergency Management Agency
Information about disasters, emergency personnel, education and training, where to obtain assistance, and a special section for kids.

Heritage Emergency National Task Force
Co-sponsored by Heritage Preservation and FEMA. Information for institutions and also the public on how to prepare for disasters and what to do after a disaster.

The Library of Congress - Emergency Preparedness
Specific information for libraries. Topics include fire recovery, risk management, and water damage.

MedlinePlus - Disaster Preparation and Recovery
Includes resources for children and information on specific disasters and emergencies.

National Library of Medicine - Disaster Information Management Research Center
Provides access to quality disaster health information at all stages of preparation, response, mitigation and recovery.

National Library of Medicine's Enviro-Health Links
Environmental health information links including toxicology and WISER (Wireless Information System for First Responders). Selected links:

  • Disaster Recovery and Environmental Health - help in recovering from a disaster whether natural or manmade including guidelines for environmental cleanup.
  • Biological Warfare - provides links to information about biological warfare pathogens
  • Hurricanes - includes links to managing emergency health services; information on mold, drinking water, hazardous materials; cleanup and recovery
  • Tornadoes - overview, preparedness, cleanup, información in Español, animals in disasters
  • Wildfires - information on health effects from fires and exposure to smoke; links to air quality resources, environmental clean-up following fires, and animals in disasters.
  • Special Populations: Emergency and Disaster Preparedness - provides links to selected websites featuring emergency preparedness for special populations, including people with disabilities, people with visual or hearing impairments, senior citizens, children, and women. The Ready Campaign asks individuals to do three things to prepare for the unexpected: get a kit, make a plan, and be informed. Information for senior citizens, people with disabilities, and pet owners.

Disaster Mitigation Planning Assistance
A joint project of the Michigan State University Libraries, the Center for Great Lakes Culture and the California Preservation Program.

New York Academy of Medicine
The New York Academy of Medicine has released a report and tools that will enable households, work places, schools and early childhood/youth programs, and governments to anticipate and address problems they would face in emergencies. The Academy's main report documents that the emergency preparedness instructions being given to people and organizations do not address many important sheltering-in-place issues and sometimes make matters worse.
