Library Student Outreach Award Call for Applications

The purpose of this award is to promote the value of outreach to library school students interested in health sciences librarianship.

The award provides funding for students to attend and participate in outreach activities at the South Central Chapter (SCC) of the Medical Library Association’s Annual Meeting taking place in Tulsa, OK October 17 – 21, 2009. At the conference, students will attend meetings and other activities designed for them to learn about the importance of health information outreach and outreach services conducted by librarians in the South Central Region.

Eligibility

Library students currently attending an ALA-accredited Library or Information Sciences program located in the South Central Region (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas) are eligible to apply.

Funding

Ten (10) awards. This award is intended to cover all expenses, up to $1,400 per student, related to conference attendance including: registration, travel, lodging and per diem (meals will be reimbursed at $45 per day maximum).

Evaluation Criteria

Criteria for selection include: applicant's demonstrated interest in health information outreach; inclusion of a well-defined plan to share the knowledge gained from the conference with fellow library students or colleagues.

During the Conference

During the conference, recipients are required to:

Attend the conference for at least 3 days
Attend as many of the scientific and poster sessions as possible
Attend the NN/LM SCR Outreach Advisory Committee meeting (Date and time to be announced)
Attend the Library School Students/New Librarians session (Date and time to be announced)
Staff the NN/LM SCR exhibit booth for 1 hour

After the Conference

After the conference, recipients are required to submit a report outlining:

Scientific and poster sessions attended
Lessons learned from the NN/LM SCR Outreach Advisory Committee meeting
Description of interesting outreach projects
Ideas for future outreach services

Excerpts of the report will be posted on the NN/LM SCR blog, Blogadillo.

Publication and Publicity

The awardee shall acknowledge the support of the National Library of Medicine whenever publicizing the work under this contract in any media by including an acknowledgment substantially as follows:
