CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Hundreds of police officers, fire fighters, emergency medical personnel and other emergency responders will be in Charleston this week for the second annual West Virginia Public Safety Expo at the Charleston Civic Center.

The exposition, a series of classes and workshops for law enforcement and emergency responders, runs May 14 -17.

Twenty-one instructors are scheduled to present classes at the expo, including Kenneth D. Honig, commander of the Port Authority Police at John F. Kennedy International Airport, who recently helped lead the emergency response to the Hudson River plane crash of US Airways Flight 1549. Other presenters include Kentucky State Medical Examiner David Jones, FBI agents, firefighters and psychologists.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kanawha County Sheriff's officer arrested an Ohio fugitive along U.S. 60 in Jefferson on Monday.

Keith Allen Nibert, 47, of Beverly, Ohio, was wanted on probation violations in Gallia County, Ohio. He was also wanted on warrants from Wood County for battery and petit larceny.

Cpl. J.H. Thaxton stopped to check on Nibert as he hitchhiked along U.S. 60. He was arrested without incident and was in South Central Regional Jail on Tuesday awaiting extradition.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Police say an 11-year-old Martinsburg girl threatened her 7-year-old sister with a gun to force the younger child to play with her.

Martinsburg police say the girl also pointed the .38-caliber pistol at her grandmother. The child surrendered the gun after the grandmother made several demands for it.

The weapon wasn't loaded, but police believe the girl didn't know that. The incident occurred Monday evening at the grandmother's residence.

Police say the two girls argued and the 11-year-old then retrieved the gun from her grandmother's bedroom.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. - A West Virginia State University student was arrested Monday in the death of his pregnant girlfriend in Maryland over the weekend.

Bernard Bellamy, 20, of Oxon Hill, Md., was arrested in his dorm room at WVSU after Valicia Andrea Demery was found dead in Prince George's County, Md.

Police in Prince George's County found Demery around 6 a.m. on Sunday. She appeared to have died from body trauma, according to a press information officer with the Prince George's County Police.

MOUNT NEBO, W.Va. - A Florida man was arrested in Nicholas County after allegedly assaulting a woman and wounding a Nicholas County sheriff's deputy during a high-speed police chase.

Nicholas County deputies responded to a domestic dispute in the county on Monday morning to find Bryan Brooks, 34, of Florida, had allegedly assaulted Shawna McBride, of Summersville, with a weapon. 

Police responded to the call, and found Brooks fleeing the area in a stolen 2001 four-door Saturn. 

Police chased the suspect into Summersville, where Summersville Police and State Police joined the high-speed chase.

CLENDENIN, W.Va. -- Two Kanawha County residents were arrested on Saturday for allegedly growing marijuana plants at their home on Falling Rock Road.

Jamie Johnston, 27, and Kimberly Robinson, 34, were arrested after State Police received a tip that the two were growing marijuana at their house, according to State Police.

Troopers discovered 14 plants at the residence during a search, according to State Police.

Johnston and Robinson were arrested for cultivation or marijuana and conspiracy with intent to deliver.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- An illegal alien residing in Kanawha County was arrested on Friday night after West Virginia state troopers were called to his residence for a gunshots complaint.

State Police interviewed Yong Quing Ren, 46, of Dunbar after they found a .22LR revolver at his residence.

The Charleston office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement informed Trooper M.J. Napier and Trooper K. M. Williams that Ren was wanted by the New York City ICE for aggravated deportation since 1999, according to the State Police.

Ren was arrested for being a fugitive from justice and for being an illegal alien in possession of a handgun, State Police said.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kanawha County sheriff's deputies are asking for help locating two people they believe are passing stolen checks.

Lt. Bryan Stover of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said an unknown white female allegedly passed a forged check at the Speedway at 304 Goff Mountain Road on March 31. An unknown white male later passed a forged check at the Speedway at 5296 Big Tyler Road on April 16.

The woman was seen in a light blue Ford Taurus station wagon. The male was seen in a white Ford Explorer.

CROSS LANES, W.Va. -- Kanawha County sheriff's deputies are looking for a man they believe broke into two stores in Cross Lanes early Monday.

Lt. Bryan Stover of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said the man broke out the glass front door of the Tobacco Warehouse at 919 Cross Lanes Drive sometime between 5 and 5:30 a.m. Monday. Stover said he grabbed several cartons of cigarettes and ran back through the door.

Around the same time, someone broke into the Good Stuff Pantry at 5109 Big Tyler Road and also made off with cartons of cigarettes.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Kanawha County woman was arrested late Thursday night for allegedly murdering her mother in eastern Kanawha County.

Marlo Denny, 40, allegedly had an altercation with her mother, Nancy McGraw, 65, Thursday night around 10 p.m. that resulted in McGraw's death, according to State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous.

The two women allegedly started to argue at their home on Springfork Drive in Campbells Creek on Thursday night.

WINFIELD, W.Va. -- A Liberty woman was charged this week with attempted daytime burglary after allegedly shooting down a neighbor's door on three separate occasions.

Diana Lynn Osborne, 56, was charged with the felony offense of daytime burglary on Tuesday in Putnam County Magistrate Court.

Osborne allegedly shot through the doors of Cinda and Carlton Thornton, her neighbors across the road in Liberty, on two separate occasions before her arrest, according to the criminal complaint filed in Putnam County Magistrate Court.

WINFIELD, W.Va. -- A Hurricane man was charged this week with indecent exposure and trespassing after allegedly exposing himself multiple times at tanning salons in Putnam County.

Scott Matvey, 35, was arraigned in Putnam County Magistrate Court Wednesday after he allegedly exposed himself at the Sahara Tanning II in Teays Valley on Monday.

According to the police report, Matvey paid for one tanning session, then entered a room not assigned to him, according to the arrest warrant. An employee entered that room a short time later and found Matvey standing in the room naked, according to the warrant.

MADISON, W.Va. -- Three volunteer firefighters were arrested Friday for allegedly setting a building on fire in Madison earlier this week.

Dustin Vance, 19, of Foster; Gerald Waters III, 19, of Madison; and Larry Nunnery III, 19, of Danville, were arrested, according to the state Fire Marshal's Office. The three are members of the Madison Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire at 10 C Ave. in Madison started at about 2 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the Fire Marshal's Office.

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. -- A former Mason County volunteer firefighter has been charged with participating in the burning of two structures.

The Mason County grand jury charged 25-year-old Kimberly Sue Blake of Mason this week with two counts of first-degree arson and one count of conspiracy.

Blake is accused of conspiring with co-defendant Brent Donovan Kapp to burn two structures in Mason in October 2007. Both were members of the Mason Volunteer Fire Department at the time.

Kapp pleaded guilty in February to one count of first-degree arson and one count of second-degree arson.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The four-and-a-half-day search for a missing canoeist has come to an end after his body was recovered in the New River around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The body of Jody Jones, 31, was found about 3 1/2 miles downstream from where he first went missing, said Leah Perkowski, National Park Service spokesperson.

"He was found floating in a pool of water on the river right in an area called Upper Keeney Rapids, which is a very technical section of the river," she said.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Charleston man was in jail Wednesday, charged with having a stolen truck.

Michael Lee Spencer, 36, of 499 Falcon Drive, was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle after a tip that the stolen truck was spotted in his driveway.

William Paul Johnson of Nitro reported the 1994 Ford Ranger pickup truck stolen on Monday, according to Lt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

INWOOD, W.Va. -- The third time was the charm for a Berkeley County man who made multiple orders at the Inwood Burger King before diving across the counter and stealing money from the register.

The man entered the restaurant around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday and ordered a medium Coke. He didn't have enough money to pay for the drink, so he changed his order to a small Coke, according to the West Virginia State Police.

The drink was still too expensive, so the man, who was described as having red, disheveled hair, a gap between his teeth and black pants that appeared to have chili peppers all over them, placed a third order -- this time for a Whopper Jr., according to police

HOLLY GROVE, W.Va. -- Authorities have identified a Holly Grove man whose body was found early Tuesday.

James Swartz, 63, was found on Groves School Road about 7:30 a.m., Kanawha County sheriff's officials said.

Lt. Bryan Stover of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said the man went out for a daily walk on Monday and didn't come home.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A Charleston man was arrested Thursday for allegedly robbing and wounding two individuals on the train tracks near the 500 block of Hunt Avenue Tuesday evening.

Levi Kennith Carter, 20, of Charleston, is being charged with felony first-degree robbery after allegedly robbing and assaulting two people around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the criminal complaint filed with the Kanawha County Magistrate Court, Carter, along with co-defendants Rakeen Edwards, 18, and a 13-year-old male, saw a black male and a white female sitting in the woods next to the train tracks near Hunt Avenue.

Edwards was arrested Thursday morning in connection with a robbery that occurred Wednesday night near the Rite Aid on Charleston's West Side. When he was brought in for questioning, Edwards recounted the alleged incident from Tuesday evening, indicating that both Carter and the juvenile participated in the robbery.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charleston Police arrested Thursday one of the four suspects in Saturday's West Side shooting.

Adam Matthew Denson, 21, of Charleston was arrested on Thursday, according to Charleston Police Department Lt. Preston Hickman. Denson, along with Christopher Reese Mitchell, 19, and Daniel M. "Mo" Battle, 24, allegedly shot their cousin, Ronald Terrell, Jr., 22, seven times in the torso and chin on April 25.

This was the second alleged incident where Terrell had been the target of violence by his cousins. The charges in the first shooting, which occurred in Montgomery in January, are still pending.

Police are still searching for Mitchell and Battle, along with a fourth person suspected in the shooting.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- South Charleston officials hope to continue with an annexation project along Corridor G after the property owner was killed by a falling tree on Tuesday.

Bob Anderson, director of the South Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau, said city officials have talked with the family of Herman Fletcher and will continue with plans to annex 130 acres Fletcher owned off Corridor G near Eagle Drive.

"We were going to fulfill his dream of developing that land," Anderson said.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A 20-year-old man and his girlfriend were robbed near the Rite Aid on Washington Street West Wednesday night, said Charleston police Sgt. A.K. Davis.

Police say Rakeen Edwards, 18, pulled out a gun and robbed Brian Ray and his 17-year-old girlfriend about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Edwards is charged with the robbery but police are continuing to identify other suspects they believe may be involved, Davis said.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A man shot Wednesday night in the Washington Manor housing complex on Daniel Boone Drive is in serious but stable condition, said Charleston police Sgt. E. Hodges.

No arrests have been made, but police have information on a possible suspect, Hodges said.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was shot in the head, Hodges said. The wound doesn't appear to be life threatening and police are hoping to speak to the man, said Hodges.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A domestic violence call early Wednesday led Charleston police to a fugitive from justice.

Sgt. Eric Hodges of the Charleston Police Department said city police were called to 1004 Lawndale Lane about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday about a domestic violence call. Once there, they discovered 28-year-old James Loveless of Roseberry Circle.

Hodges said Loveless was a fugitive wanted on several other warrants. Police also found a bag with Loveless that contained two stolen handguns, a 9mm Llama semiautomatic pistol and a .45-caliber Star semiautomatic.

ROANOKE, W.Va. -- Authorities are investigating the death of a Lewis County turkey hunter whose body was found near Stonewall Jackson Lake.

Searchers found the body of Shawn Stewart, 32, at about noon Tuesday in the Wolf Run area.

State Police said Wednesday that Stewart died from an apparent gunshot wound. They said his wife reported him missing after he failed to return home from a hunting trip Monday.

ELKINS, W.Va. (AP) -- Mill Creek Mayor Diane Currence and her two adult children face charges of bringing contraband to an inmate at Huttonsville Correctional Center.

Currence, her son Jason and her daughter Kathryn were all in custody Wednesday morning at Tygart Valley Regional Jail awaiting arraignment in magistrate court.

The Randolph County Sheriff's Department says Diane Currence is charged with delivering contraband to an adult in custody, conspiracy and possession of marijuana.

Jason Currence is charged with conspiracy to commit delivery of contraband to an adult in custody and possession of marijuana. Kathryn Currence is charged with delivery of contraband to an adult in custody.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A West Side man was shot Tuesday night while running away from a group of men who tried to rob him and his girlfriend, police said.

Sgt. Eric Hodges of the Charleston Police Department said Harry Jones, 51, and Crystal Stevens, 34, both of Bream Street, were crossing the railroad tracks in the 500 block of Hunt Avenue about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when they were approached by a group of four men.

Hodges said one of the men had a gun, and the group demanded money. He said Jones struggled with the men, but they made off with Stevens' purse.

The suspects fired four or five shots as Jones and Stevens were running away, one of which hit Jones in the left hand, Hodges said. Jones was recovering in CAMC General Hospital on Wednesday.

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- A judge has dismissed a negligent homicide charge against Mount View High School football coach Leon Steven Gravely in the death of a 70-year-old bicyclist.

Prosecutors contended that Gravely was talking on his cell phone and was distracted when his vehicle hit Charles Edward Williamson on the Coalfields Expressway in 2007.

Raleigh Circuit Judge H.L. Kirkpatrick dismissed the charge last week. Citing a state Supreme Court ruling, Kirkpatrick said driver inattentiveness alone doesn't prove reckless disregard, which is required for a conviction.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A homeless man from Charleston was jailed without bond Tuesday for allegedly slashing a friend's throat after an argument.

John Douglas Mason, 45, was charged with first-degree murder after being arrested late Monday night at Saint Francis Hospital in Charleston.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court, Mason had argued with 49-year-old Charles W. Sears earlier in the evening over a bottle of spilled vodka. According to a witness who was with the men, Mason told Sears, "I'll stab you to f---ing death before the night is over."

LOGAN, W.Va. -- Logan County officials are working with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration to give residents a way to safely dispose of prescription medications.

Narcotic painkillers like oxycodone and hydrocodone have long been subject to abuse in southern West Virginia. Residents in the area have seen their homes burglarized by addicts rooting through medicine chests.

Logan County Sheriff's Deputy Sonja Porter says the program, called Take Back, is scheduled to launch in Logan, Man and Chapmanville in the next 60 days.

Residents with old or unused prescriptions will be able to deposit them with a police officer. The medication will then be turned over to the DEA for proper disposal.

WILLIAMSTOWN, W.Va. -- A Williamstown High School teacher who took nunchucks to her classroom has been charged with having a deadly weapon on school grounds.

Science teacher Jaime Seltzer was arraigned in Wood County Magistrate Court after being removed from school Friday.

Williamstown Principal Pat Peters has declined comment on the incident. Wood County Superintendent Bill Niday says he'll start an investigation this week.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Three arrest warrants have been issued, and police are looking for a fourth suspect, after a near-fatal shooting on Charleston's West Side Saturday afternoon.

Warrants have been issued for Christopher Reese Mitchell, 19, Adam Denson, 21, and Daniel M. Battle, aka Mo, 24, all of Charleston, for the attempted murder of their cousin, Charleston Police Sgt. Autumn Davis said Monday afternoon.

The victim, Ronald Terrell Jr., 22, of Montgomery, was in Charleston allegedly visiting a friend when he was shot seven times in the torso at the corner of Thornwood and Grant near Glenwood Elementary School at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Cabell County authorities have identified the body of a man found Monday in a garbage can along Interstate 64 near Milton as Andrew Raymond Mulvany Jr.

Mulvany, 62, is from Carteret County, N.C., the Cabell County Sheriff's Department announced Wednesday afternoon.

Sheriff Tom McComas said that Mulvany led a "transient lifestyle" and had several known addresses in Carteret County, according to the man's family.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- State Police, Kanawha County sheriff's deputies, volunteer firefighters and volunteer dog teams continued to scour the woods of Kanawha State Forest on Monday for an elderly hiker who disappeared over the weekend.

Kenneth Williamson, 88, was last seen by an ATV rider inside the forest late Sunday afternoon, said Lt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Charleston police arrested a Jackson County man they believe robbed a West Side convenience store early Monday.

Sgt. Eric Hodges of the Charleston Police Department said a man walked into the 7-Eleven convenience store at 841 Washington St., W. about 3:45 a.m. The man held his hands under his clothes as if he had a gun and demanded cash.

The man then made off on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. Hodges said police caught up with him within 25 minutes in the 800 block of Hunt Avenue.

Police arrested 34-year-old Walter Cavender of Ravenswood and charged him with first-degree robbery. Cavender was in Kanawha Magistrate Court on Monday morning awaiting arraignment.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- After hundreds of trouble calls to a single service station, Huntington police are looking for a way to curb businesses that they say are chronic nuisances.

Police were called to a Sunoco station in the city between 250 and 300 times last year, but that's not even the record.

Chief Skip Holbrook says in an earlier year, the police visited the station 340 times, for calls ranging from prostitution to drug trafficking and assault.

The station was shut down earlier this month.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A preliminary hearing will be held next week for a Charleston woman accused of trying to sell her baby for rent money.

Rebecca Sue Taylor, 19, of 1300 Renaissance Circle was arrested Wednesday and charged with trying to sell her 5-month-old son, according to a criminal complaint on file in Kanawha Magistrate Court.

According to the complaint, an acquaintance, Leigh Burr, went to the Charleston Police Department on Sunday and told officers Taylor kept trying to sell her baby. Burr told police Taylor offered to sell the infant for $10,000.

Jeffery Steele, 28, of Daniels, was arrested at his house on Wednesday after police say he robbed Alice's in Beaver on April 12 and Pops in Daniels on April 22. Steele admitted to both crimes at the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office, according to a news release.

Raleigh County sheriff's deputies followed a lead from the store clerk at Pops when Steele robbed it early Wednesday morning, the release states.

WELCH, W.Va. - Two men from McDowell County were wounded Wednesday evening after an apparent knife fight in the Oozley Hollow area.

Jeffery Price, 46, of Paynesville and Denfert Dewayne Blankenship, 25, of Bradshaw, allegedly got into an argument which led to both men stabbing each other, according to a State Police news release.

Price had numerous stab wounds to his torso and head and Blankenship had several cuts on his hands, according to the release.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Yeager Airport was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after baggage screeners found what looked like a bomb in a passenger's luggage.

Airport Director Rick Atkinson said the airport was evacuated about 2:20 p.m. after Transportation and Safety Administration screeners saw a suspicious object while X-raying luggage.

Airport staff called the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department bomb squad, which confirmed that the object looked suspicious.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A West Virginia fugitive, who has been on the run for 14 years, was arrested on Sunday in South Carolina.

The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department issued a warrant for Joe Lee Dustin in August 1994 for a probation violation and a former second-degree sexual assault conviction, according to a news release from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Dustin had several false identifications when U.S. Marshals arrested him without incident on Sunday night, according to the release.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Two FBI workers are accused of using surveillance equipment to spy on teenage girls as they undressed and tried on prom gowns at a charity event at a West Virginia mall.

The FBI employees have been charged with conspiracy and committing criminal invasion of privacy. They were working in an FBI satellite control room at the mall when they positioned a camera on temporary changing rooms and zoomed in for at least 90 minutes on girls dressing for the Cinderella Project fashion show, Marion County Prosecutor Pat Wilson said Monday.

WEST UNION, W.Va. - A 68-year-old Doddridge County man was charged with child abuse over the weekend.

William Dallas Holden, of Greenwood, was charged with one count of child abuse by a custodian, two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and five counts of using obscene matter with the intent of seducing a minor, said State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Baylous.

Corporal A.W. Scott of the State Police Child Protection Division arrested Holden about 11 a.m. Friday, Baylous said.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A man who State Police say had nearly 300 marijuana plants in his basement was in jail Monday.

Sgt. Michael Baylous said Cpl. R.H. Greene and J.J. Overbaugh of the Quincy State Police detachment went to the Holly Grove home of Nathan Lee King Jr. about 1 p.m. Sunday and asked permission to search his house.

Baylous said troopers found 296 marijuana plants in the basement.

MADISON, W.Va. -- Police charged a Boone County couple over the weekend with operating a methamphetamine lab in a home near Racine.

Boone County sheriff's deputies were conducting patrols in the Big Coal River area when they received a tip about someone operating a methamphetamine lab in Short Creek near Racine, said Sheriff Rodney Miller.

Deputies went to the home of Jeremy Darrell Workman, 28, and Brooksan Kay Huffman, 22, and found materials used to make the drug, Miller said. They also found a large dump behind the house where they believe the couple disposed of waste from making methamphetamine.

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. -- A 3-year-old boy was killed over the weekend in a fire that swept through a mobile home near Hedgesville.

The Hedgesville Fire Department, West Virginia State Police and state Fire Marshal's office all responded to a fire on Allensville Road that started sometime before 4 p.m. Friday.

Thomas Robert Fishburn, 24, was airlifted from the mobile home to the Washington Burn Center in Washington, D.C., with second and third-degree burns covering 50 percent of his body, according to the Martinsburg State Police detachment.

HURRICANE, W.Va. -- A Putnam County man who died Saturday afternoon in a motorcycle crash has been identified.

Bruce Thacker, 61, of Hurricane was driving north on Hurricane Creek Road near Coleman Creek when he lost control of his motorcycle, causing it to go left of center and into a ditch line, said Deputy S. Booth with the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

Thacker was pronounced dead at the scene.
