Hepatitis and American Indians/Alaska Natives

Historically, the highest rates for Hepatitis A occurred among American Indian/Alaska Natives. However rates which were over 60 cases per 100,000 before 1995, have decreased dramatically, and now are lower as compared to all other ethnic groups1.
  • In 2006, American Indian/Alaska Natives were 2.7 times more likely to develop a case of Hepatitis C, as compared to the White population.
  • In 2005, American Indian/Alaska Natives ages 40 years and over, were 70% more likely to have Hepatitis B, than non-Hispanic Whites.
  • Data on chronic Hepatitis B and chronic Hepatitis C virus infection (past or present) are not included by the CDC in the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System reports, because they are undergoing data quality review. Neither is this data reported in the CDC Healthy People 2010 database.
