Thursday, January 15th, 2009

NN/LM Pacific Northwest Region is pleased to announce that Go Local Montana is now live! This is the first live Go Local project in our region and we couldn’t be more pleased. Montana Go Local is a project of the Voices of Hope with partners 2-1-1/First Call for Help District XI Human Resources Council, 2-1-1/First Call for Help United Way, Montana State Library, and The Help Center. The site is possible thanks to the dedication and hard work of Jackie Fitzgerald.  Voices of Hope would like to send a special thanks to Susie McIntyre for initiating the project. More promotion of the site will follow in the coming months, but you can take a peek at: http://medlineplus.gov/montana.  Congratulations to the entire Go Local Montana team!

Thanks, Public Health!

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Consider just a few of the ways public health workers contribute to the well-being of our communities. Sanitarians and environmental health engineers make sure we have safe food to eat, clean water to drink, and fresh air to breathe. Emergency preparedness experts develop plans to keep us secure in the event of a natural disaster, disease outbreak, or other unthinkable situation. Public health physicians and nurses provide medical care to those without insurance. Health educators work to stem the tide of increasing health care costs by teaching the prevention and management of chronic diseases. Librarians and other information professionals put quality health information in the hands of those who need it.

We at the RML would like to thank you, our Network members, for all you do in support of public health. We encourage you get connected with other public health workers in your community. Find out what you can do to help meet their information needs.

Web Tools Training for Rural Oregon Health and Social Service Professionals
By Laura Kuperstein
Oregon SafeNet Program Manager

A year ago I received funding from NN/LM Pacific Northwest Region’s Express Outreach Award to train health and social service professionals on four websites- Oregon SafeNet, MedlinePlus, Oregon Helps and the Beehive - and to give information about Oregon SafeNet, our statewide maternal and child health line. My proposal was to partner with the Oregon Child Development Coalition, an agency that provides Head Start and child care to 3500 primarily Hispanic children in mostly rural areas of Oregon.

PNR Go Local Funding - Fall 2008

Friday, October 10th, 2008

NN/LM PNR is pleased to announce this year’s round of funding to support implementation of Go Local in the Pacific Northwest. The MedlinePlus Go Local project links MedlinePlus users to health services in their local community related to the health topic they are researching. Conversely, the project also directs users of the Go Local site to MedlinePlus health topics. For example, users get medical information on diabetes from MedlinePlus and then visit a Go Local site for nearby health programs, services, and providers.

The end user experience for Go Local is that each MedlinePlus health topic links to relevant local services on the Go Local site. Go Local sites receive this user traffic from each MedlinePlus health topic and route it to a page listing matching Go Local records or to a page explaining that the site contains no matching local services. To see how these links work, choose a Go Local area from the pull-down list or map link on any MedlinePlus health topic page.
