“Invest in health, build a safer future”

The Millennium Challenge Corporation recognizes the importance of investing in health to foster successful human and economic development.  Two MCC indicators focus on a country’s efforts to provide adequate health care to its citizens:

The Total Public Expenditure on Health indicator measures the government’s commitment to investing in the health and well-being of its people.

The Immunization Rate indicator measures a government’s commitment to providing essential public health services and reducing child mortality.

MCC and its countries are investing in health through various programs:

Compact Countries

Cape Verde

flag of El SalvadorContractors working on MCC projects are required to carry out an HIV/AIDS Awareness Program developed by the Cape Verde Committee to Fight HIV/AIDS.  Local residents will also benefit from this anti-AIDS campaign.

El Salvador

flag of El SalvadorOur investments in improved water and sanitation will benefit 90,000 people in the poorest region of the country.  MCC has committed a total of$95.1 million to social infrastructure and human development.

Ghana

flag of GhanaGhana’s compact supports basic community services such as the construction and rehabilitation of educational facilities, water and sanitation facilities, and electrification of rural areas.    MCC funding totals $75 million for this portion of the compact. 

 

Threshold Countries

Indonesia

flag of IndonesiaThe Government of Indonesia has proposed a program to immunize at least 80 percent of children under the age of one for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis and 90 percent of children for measles in 90 percent of Indonesia’s districts. The program will expand the work of health care providers in hard-to-reach areas of the island nation where immunization rates are low.  MCC has allocated $20 million to improve Indonesia’s health care system.

Moldova

flag of MoldovaMoldova seeks to prevent and curb corruption in the health care system by developing internationally acceptable standards for diagnostic and treatment protocols, developing a code of conduct for medical personnel, and increasing transparency of health care financing.

Kenya

flag of KenyaKenya’s $12.7 million threshold program will focus on strengthening transparency and accountability in the health sector to reduce opportunities for corruption.  MCC funding will strengthen procurement capacity and accountability, improve supply chain management of public health resources, and establish capacity within the Ministry of Health to monitor procurement and assess compliance.

MCC and the Eligible Countries’ Proposals:

Lesotho

flag of Lesotho40% of the proposed Lesotho program is aimed at strengthening the delivery of essential health services.  Maternal and child health and HIV/AIDs prevention and treatment will be improved through human resources investments and public and private health infrastructure advancements.

Mozambique

flag of MozambiqueMozambique has proposed using $371 million of MCC funding to improve its water and sanitation facilities.  These changes will result in superior health for many Mozambicans living in rural areas that currently do not have accessibility to clean water.
