| Paved surfaces cover an estimated 43,000 square miles in the United States, and nearly a quarter million acres are paved or repaved each year. The result of all of this impervious surface area is that rainwater often has nowhere to go. The Focus article (p. A456) examines the consequences of runoff--often containing toxic chemicals--on surrounding waterways and what it may mean for human and ecological health.
