As Director of Information Technology for the County of Roanoke, Virginia, Bill wanted to learn about best practices in Web 2.0 and wasn't able to find much. Working with Pam Broviak, Director of Public Works, LaSalle, Illinois, they founded the MuniGov2.0 site as a place where local governments could come together and collaborate and share best practices. Design of the site is intended to put government leaders directly in touch with the theory and practice of Web 2.0 in government and the people who are using the technologies. HYPERLINK "https://sites.google.com/site/munigov20/Home" MuniGov 2.0 was launched in late September 2008. The website houses best practices and resources applicable to any government official interested in using Web 2.0 to improve services and communication to citizens. Currently, there are over 200 members from city, county and state governments across the country, as well as Australia, Canada, Brazil and the United Kingdom, who come together to share their Web 2.0 experiences. What started as an idea for an online collection of Web 2.0 best practices for state and local governments has morphed into a community of MuniGov members who meet weekly in Second Life, the popular virtual world. The meeting is open to anyone and upcoming meetings are posted on the HYPERLINK "https://sites.google.com/site/munigov20/Home" MuniGov2.0 website. The group has built a dedicated space in the virtual environment Second Life, which includes a conference room, theatre, R&D lab and "gov pods." The pods are essentially small offices that members can claim for their organizations. Gov pods are intended to serve as a "home base" for conducting interviews or conducting Second Life tours for colleagues and bosses. Roanoke County and other MuniGov members have outfitted their Second Life spaces with their city/county seal. HYPERLINK "https://sites.google.com/site/munigov20/Home" MuniGov 2.0 members developed a Second Life Orientation Guide to help users get a quick start into Second Life so that they can participate in the weekly MuniGov2.0 meetings. In addition to the tutorial of helpful tips to get started, there are more advanced tools to use when you've gotten your Second Life sea-legs. HYPERLINK "https://sites.google.com/site/munigov20/Home" MuniGov2.0 is modeled on the premise that the more people participate in the development of the product the more valuable it will become. In line with this premise, all ideas and collaboration are welcome. Individual feedback and submissions are what will make the site a truly effective resource allowing everyone to learn from each other. The site is dynamic and will continue to evolve over time as more people begin to explore and apply the concepts and technologies of the Web2.0 movement.
