What does it cost to use data, photos or images from Recreation.gov?
Almost all the data on Recreation.gov is free and available for your use, with a few major qualifiers:
- Use of official agency logos is restricted. Do not copy them onto your website without permission.
- Some images may be copyrighted - if so, that restriction is noted. Contact the agency responsible for that facility with the restricted image to obtain permission for use.
- Once you follow a link off the Recreation.gov website, the rights to use the data, photos or images are determined by the managers of that different system. Do not assume that data on other systems is in the public domain; copyright restrictions may apply.
There is no fee for using the data from Recreation.gov, and no need to contact us to obtain formal permission for incorporating the public domain data, photos, or images into your computer system/website. The text descriptions in the Recreation.gov database is in the public domain. You may add that text to your web pages, or "deep link" to a Recreation.gov page with frames surrounding the Recreation.gov information.

The data is provided at no cost in order to encourage wide distribution and regular updates to different publications, databases, and websites, so customers can receive correct information from many different systems. Recreation.gov is an electronic government ("e-gov") initiative that demonstrates the advantages of using a data standard based on an XML Schema and data exchange via Web services. Eliminating costs wherever possible and simplifying the data exchange process will facilitate dissemination of consistent, reliable information.
