Staying Healthy at 50+

"Staying Healthy at 50+", an essential preventive health guide for seniors, is now available in both English and Spanish languages. Developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), in partnership with AARP and the DHHS Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), this booklet is part of Put Prevention Into Practice (PPIP), the prevention implementation program of AHRQ. All of the information in Staying Healthy at 50+ is based on the recommendations of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which evaluates and reports on the scientific evidence for the use of many preventive services.

Staying Healthy at 50+ is designed to encourage seniors to actively participate in their preventive health care and contains easy-to-use charts to track personal health information and sample questions to ask health care providers, as well as other sources of health information for senior populations. The health information in this guide covers many topics, including: blood pressure, diabetes, depression, tobacco use, osteoporosis, hearing loss, menopause, and the pneumococcal and flu vaccines.

Staying Healthy at 50+ has proven to be a useful resource for seniors. Since its release in January, health plans, providers, advocacy organizations, state health departments, and Federal agencies, including the Administration on Aging and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have made the guide available in the following ways:

  • purchasing copies of the guide for member distribution
  • reprinting the guide for member distribution
  • linking to the guide on the AHRQ web site
  • announcing the availability of the guide in organizational newsletters
