TIGTA's primary organizational functions are the Office of Audit (OA) and the Office of Investigations (OI). TIGTA's Offices of Mission Support, Inspections and Evaluations, and Chief Counsel support OA's and OI's effort.

TIGTA's audit and investigative activities are designed to:
  • Promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in administering the Nation's tax system.
  • Detect fraud and deter fraud and abuse in IRS programs and operations.
  • Protect IRS against external attempts to corrupt or threaten its employees.
  • Prevent fraud, abuse, and deficiencies in IRS programs and operations.
