BTG licensed agency leads rural outreach effort
St. Vincent Health led the development of an integrated network of field-based workers that connects vulnerable populations in nine largely rural counties in Central Indiana to health, human, and social services. The program has enhanced access to medical services by serving more than 26,000 clients; training more than 400 interpreters to provide 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week coverage in area hospitals and via telephone; and providing uninsured individuals with $14.3 million in free or reduced-cost prescription drugs as of June 2008.

Instructional DVD for Health Care Providers
How well do you communicate with your patients who speak limited English?

Communicating Effectively Through an Interpreter
Developed to help providers choose appropriate interpreters, recognize signs of professional and unprofessional interpretation, work effectively with a trained interpreter, and guide an untrained interpreter.

When you and your patient don't speak the same language, providing quality care is almost impossible without the help of someone to interpret. Health care institutions today turn to a variety of people to bridge the language gap, from untrained bilingual staff to professional medical interpreters. However, there's a knack to working with even the best interpreter.  Click here to learn more.

New! Advanced Cultural Competency Training Workshops
A new series of advanced training workshops has been developed by the Cross Cultural Health Care Program. Designed to be taught in an 8-hour format, the trainings focus on strategies to end health disparities and on achieving health equity for medically-underserved communities. Each of the advanced trainings is presented with short background information and learning objectives.

A variety of interactive instructional methods will be utilized to deliver the content. Relevant case scenarios will assist in skills building. The recommended strategies will enhance effective cross cultural communications and the creation and sustaining of effective personal and professional partnerships for health, social and human services. Please see the Cultural Competency Training portion of our website for more information or email Ira SenGupta to request more information.
