Careers with the Office of Inspector General

Each day, Americans make more than a billion trips on highways, in the air, over the rails and over the water. For most of us, the nation's transportation system is taken for granted until something unexpected happens - a commuter train breaks down; a flight is cancelled without notice; lives are lost when a pipeline ruptures. At the Office of Inspector General (OIG) in the Department of Transportation (DOT), we help to ensure those trips are as safe as possible and that the systems that keep our nation moving, run honestly and efficiently. The OIG staff includes Auditors, Analysts, Special Agents, Computer Scientists, Economists, and experts in many other disciplines. OIG results are used by DOT, Congress, and by the Administration in setting policy.

It is the job of the 410 men and women at OIG to provide independent analysis that supports the Administration and Congress in the effective administration of DOT programs and operations. The OIG is charged by Congress with providing programmatic oversight and guidance to DOT. Its legislative mandate also includes building cases against Departmental employees or contractors who engage in wasteful, fraudulent, criminal activities or who otherwise abuse the public trust.

We encourage recruits with any college major to strongly consider a position with OIG. The most common college majors in OIG are accounting, finance, computer science, law, business, and public administration. Experience has shown graduates in these fields perform well as Auditors, Analysts and Special Agents.
