Date: 04/29/2009 Description: Asian Pacific Heritage Month, 2009: Richard Jao State Dept PhotoRichard Jao is currently a Foreign Affairs Officer at the U.S. Department of State’s Pakistan Desk. In September, he will go overseas to serve as the Political and Economic Unit Chief at the U.S. Consulate in Lahore, Pakistan. He served as a Political Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan in the first half of last year and has travelled in northern Afghanistan to the provinces of Baghlan, Kunduz, and Panjshir. He has also served as a Vice-Consul at the U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou, China and as a Political/Economic officer at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, Hungary.

Prior to joining the U.S. Foreign Service, Mr. Jao worked as a Project Manager for Chevron Corporation. He speaks Mandarin Chinese, Hungarian, and is currently learning Urdu. Mr. Jao hails from New York City and holds a B.S. from the University of California, Berkeley.
