Bannerman of the Bovine Functional Genomics Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute was recognized as a young scientist (within 10 years of Ph.D.) for outstanding research contributions to the broad field of Animal/Dairy Science in the Northeast Region at the Northeast Meeting of the American Dairy Science Association and the American Society of Animal Science.

AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH SERVICE HERBERT L. ROTHBART OUTSTANDING EARLY CAREER RESEARCH SCIENTIST HONOREE FOR 2003:

Dr. Curtis P. Van Tassell of the Animal Improvement Programs and Bovine Functional Genomics Laboratories, Animal and Natural Resources Institute, is being recognized for conducting outstanding research to improve national genetic evaluation systems for dairy cattle and to identify genome regions affecting economically important health and productivity traits.

BELTSVILLE AREA OUTSTANDING EARLY CAREER RESEARCH SCIENTIST HONOREE FOR 2003:

Dr.

BELTSVILLE AREA OUTSTANDING TECHNICIAN OF THE YEAR HONOREE FOR 2003:

Deborah Van Hook - For outstanding technical support for studies that define resistance to cattle parasites in the Immunology & Disease Resistance Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute.

NORTHEAST ADSA-ASAS YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD FOR 2003:

Dr.Curtis P. Van Tassell, research geneticist in the Animal Improvement Programs and Bovine Functional Genomics Laboratories, Agricultural Research Service, USDA, at the Henry A. Wallace Beltsville Agricultural Research Center.

Since Dr. Van Tassell began his career as a research geneticist with the Agricultural Research Service in 1994, he has developed a dynamic and productive research program that continues to evolve to address the challenges facing genetic improvement of livestock, especially dairy cattle. His research program began in quantitative genetics and has expanded to gene mapping and bioinformatics.

His sustained research productivity is documented in 91 papers and abstracts, which include 9 senior authorships on 27 peer-reviewed manuscripts. Dr. Van Tassell also has played an important role in characterizing a periodic table of genes expressed in the dairy cow mammary gland by providing bioinformatics support for this effort, which resulted in submission of over 31,600 bovine expressed sequence tag sequences to GenBank, a public database. His recognized broad range of expertise in quantitative genetics, genomic data analysis, and bioinformatics as well as his understanding of the dairy industry has resulted in numerous invitations to industry meetings, national and international scientific meetings, and grant review panels.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF VETERINARY PARASITOLOGISTS DISTINGUISHED VETERINARY PARASITOLOGIST AWARD HONOREE FOR 2003:

Lou Gasbarre, Research Leader at the Bovine Functional Genomics Laboratory. This award was established to recognize outstanding contribution of an American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists member to the advancement of Veterinary Parasitology. This is an award that honors contributions to veterinary parasitology that are widely recognized internationally as significant and important to the understanding and control of parasitic diseases of animals.
