Profile

Lowell Suring joined the National Wildlife Ecology Program in 2001 after serving as a Wildlife Ecologist with the Forest Service in Alaska at several locations since 1984.  He previously held positions on the Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota, with the US Fish and Wildlife Service in New Mexico, and with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.  Lowell is a Certified Wildlife Biologist and is active in The Wildlife Society at State Chapter, Section, and International levels.  His professional interests include the development and implementation of analytical techniques and tools that may be used to evaluate the capability of habitats to support wildlife and the effects of land management activities on habitat capability.

Background

Development and implementation of techniques for broad-scale habitat assessment.

Landscape planning to maintain species of conservation concern.

Development and implementation of habitat capability models.

Assessment of habitat use patterns of species of concern.

Integration of wildlife science into National Forest System planning and management.

Management and recovery of threatened and endangered species.

Current Projects

o          Develop procedures for implementing revised NFMA regulations and directives (in cooperation with PNW Region, Wenatchee-Okanogan NF, PNW Research Station, Intermountain Region, and Boise NF).

o          Develop procedures for analysis of wildlife habitat and populations (in cooperation with PNW Research Station, Rocky Mountain Region, and University of Wyoming).

o          Assessment of sagebrush ecosystem (in cooperation with PNW Research Station, BLM, and USGS BRD).

o          Develop web-based information on effects of fire and fuel treatments on wildlife.
