MOON WALK AT BOULDER HILL LOOKOUT
RAPID CITY, SD: June 1, 2004
If you're looking for a 360-degree view of the Black Hills and
surrounding prairie, you'll want to join the Forest Service on the
June 5 Moon Walk The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Boulder
Hill Lookout site near Rockerville, SD. This one-mile, strenuous
round-trip hike will examine the history of fire lookout towers
in the Black Hills and the benefits of the recent Battle Creek wildfire.
Forest employees Frank Carroll, public affairs officer, and Amy
Ballard, forester, will present information on this area.
To further improve your comfort and enjoyment of the Moon Walk,
the Forest Service strongly suggests that you bring a flashlight,
bug spray, drinking water, and dress for an unexpected thunderstorm.
Sturdy walking shoes are needed as we will be hiking over steep,
rocky areas to access the old tower site.
To reach the Moon Walk from Rapid City, travel approximately 12
miles west on Highway 385 to Silver Mountain Road. Turn right and
travel 100 feet to Boulder Hill Road. Turn left and travel approximately
one mile to park. Please allow yourself one-hour driving time from
Rapid City. Signs will be placed at major intersections.
