Research Project: Starch Foam Production by Extrusion

Location: Plant Polymer Research

Project Number: 3620-41000-108-05
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 28, 2008
End Date: Oct 27, 2009

Objective:
Encourage and promote cooperation in the fields of technological developments, pertaining to industrial technology, technology strategy, R&D management, and technical information and training by: (1) investigating the key factors of the extrusion technology to prepare the loose-filled starch foam; and (2) preparing starch pellet-like feedstock for another foaming process by the extrusion technology.

Approach:
Starch foams will be produced by extrusion. Cooperators will explore processing of different material compositions such as starch type (especially tapioca), polymer additves, nucleation agents, and crosslinkers. ITRI will perform initial material screening and will select compositions for extrusion by NCAUR. Analysis will be performed by both.
