Research Project:
Agricultural Polymers for Prevention of Corrosion on Metals
Location: Plant Polymer Research
Project Number: 3620-41000-108-04
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Jan 01, 2009
End Date: Dec 31, 2010
Objective:
The overall objective of the program is to design and evaluate new environmentally friendly polymeric coating systems derived from agricultural commodities to protect metal substrates from corrosion or inhibit corrosion extending the life of the product. Specific objectives include: i. design biobased polymeric coatings to inhibit corrosion on metals; ii. evaluate structure-property relationships including electrochemical properties, surface properties, adhesion strength, and utilization as an undercoat or laminant; iii. transfer technology through peer-reviewed publications, patents and cooperative agreements.
Approach:
The project will focus on several biobased polymeric systems: bacterial exopolymers, starch-oil emulsions, and/or graft copolymer systems. Spray coating technology will be utilized predominantly. Electrochemical characterization will primarily use complex impedance and polarization techniques.
