Question
What kinds of life do scientists hope to find on Mars, and what would they do with the life forms?
Scientists don't know what sort of life we might find on Mars, and we will be very happy if any sort of life is discovered. It is most likely, of course, that martian life will be microbial. It might be closely related to us, suggesting a common ancestor (perhaps due to exchange of biological materials between Earth and Mars early in the history of the solar system), or it might be completely different, suggesting an independent origin. Whatever life there is on Mars, it would be a tremendous scientific accomplishment to find and study it. Careful examination would probably require that the life be returned to Earth for study in our best research laboratories.
