Without a plan or any detail, then-candidate Obama promised to close the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. The announcement was heralded by his left-wing base, France, and The View as a break from the evil Bush Administration and a return to America’s greatness.
Just two days after his inauguration, President Obama signed an executive order to close the detention facility and release or transfer the terrorists held there within one year. Again, trumpets roared and the left held hands and sang songs. The problem, however, is that in the more than 1,500 words contained in the executive order, President Obama failed to provide enough guidance for a reasonable plan.
The Heritage Foundation is out today with a new analysis of the Democrats’ Cap and Tax proposal which would institute a national energy tax and kill jobs. According to the analysis, the bill would:
Reduce aggregate gross domestic product (GDP) by $7.4 trillion,
Destroy 844,000 jobs on average, with peak years seeing unemployment rise by over 1,900,000 jobs,
Raise electricity rates 90 percent after adjusting for inflation,
Raise inflation-adjusted gasoline prices by 74 percent,
Raise residential natural gas prices by 55 percent,
Raise an average family’s annual energy bill by $1,500, and
Increase inflation-adjusted federal debt by 29 percent, or $33,400 additional federal debt per person, again after adjusting for inflation.

Despite promising a “timely, targeted and temporary” economic “stimulus,” President Obama hasn’t been too quick on the draw in getting out his trillion-dollar special interest payback.
According to the New York Times, less than 6% of the “stimulus” has made its way out of the halls of bureaucracy in Washington - despite three months to “get money out the door.” All that talk of shovel-ready projects? Only $11 million (less than 1% of the amount to be distributed by the Department of Transportation) has made its way into the hands of states for transportation projects.
Jack speaks on the floor of the House during debate on the Democrat budget resolution which nearly triples the national debt over ten years, uses gimmicks to hide the outrageous spending, and abuses the budget process to force through major changes in health care and student loans, and possibly the President’s cap and tax proposal as well.

Congressman Kingston releases results of tax simplification survey
Congressman Jack Kingston (R/GA-1) attended Tax Day TEA Parties in Rome and Athens today and has been polling his constituents over the past few weeks to gauge their interest in fundamentally reforming the tax code. After speaking with activits and with the more 500 respondents to his survey, Congressman Kingston says the results are clear: Georgians want tax reform.
“There’s no gray area here – this survey shows that Georgians are ready for tax reform and that they believe lower taxes will lead us out of our current economic woes,” Congressman Kingston said. “The fervor behind the movement matches that of a Georgia-Florida game. It’s my hope to use this survey and the thousands gathered throughout Georgia and throughout the country protesting our out dated tax policy to bring that message back to Washington and to get this debate moving forward.”
Jack spoke on the floor about the need to make tough choices to cut spending and provide for a brighter future for future generations. Congressman Kingston supported a budget that would have cut spending, reduced the national debt, and empowered small businesses and working families to realize a brighter economic future.
Congressman urges constituents to participate in survey
With Tax Day just around the corner, Congressman Jack Kingston (R/GA-1) is seeking input from First District constituents on efforts to reform the tax code. The survey, which can be filled out at https://webarchive.library.unt.edu/eot2008/20090514132332/http://kingston.house.gov/taxsurvey is designed to educate constituents on proposals for tax reform like the Fair Tax and the Flat Tax.
“All across Georgia and all across America, folks are gathering together for TEA parties,” Congressman Kingston said. “These demonstrate our frustration with an outdated tax code and the burden it places on small businesses and working families. I hope we can turn that frustration into action and get the discussion moving on reforming the tax code to provide for a more prosperous future.”
Jack spoke today on the House floor about House Democrats’ efforts to “crawfish” from the problems they created. After passing an unconstitutional bill of attainder last week to block the AIG bonuses which they allowed, they’re at it again trying to fix the problems they created. As you may remember, Senators Wyden (D-Ore.) and Snowe (R-Maine) successfully added an amendment that would block excessive bonuses to executives at bailed out firms. Senator Dodd, however, worked under the direction of the Obama Administration to have that language stripped before it was signed into law.
