States in Region 6: Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas are making great strides in reducing illegal tire dumping, cleaning up illegal dumps, and creating new end-use markets for scrap tires. And as a result of increased tire fire prevention efforts throughout the region, there were no significant tire fires in the south central states in 2001 and 2002.

Tire recycling rates are on the rise in Region 6 as new markets emerge for tire-derived fuel, crumb rubber, and various civil engineering uses. In the past two years Region 6 has co-sponsored four workshops with states, industry, and other EPA regions to promote new end-uses.

One of the Region's unique problems related to scrap tires is illegal dumping along the U.S./Mexico border. Thousands of tires are reportedly piled in and around many of Mexico's border cities. EPA Region 6 and the state of Texas are currently focusing a great deal of attention on the environmental risks of waste tire stockpiles along the border.
