This list is provider as a customer service from the US EPA Environmental Services Branch (ESB) Laboratory. This listing is an attempt to provide easy access to one source of EPA online environmental test methods. This page will be periodically updated to provide access to even more EPA methods online.

Clean Water Act Analytical Methods

We publish laboratory analytical methods that are used by industries and municipalities to analyze the chemical, physical, and biological components of wastewater and other environmental samples that are required by regulations under the authority of the Clean Water Act (CWA). All of these methods are published as regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) at Title 40 Part 136.

 

National Environmental Monitoring Index (NEMI)

NEMI is a free, searchable clearinghouse of methods and procedures for both regulatory and non-regulatory monitoring purposes for water, sediment, air and tissues.

Office of Solid Waste Methods - SW-846 On-line

SW-846 contains over 200 documents, including the Table of Contents, Disclaimer, Preface, Chapters One through Thirteen, and many different methods for the sampling and analysis of wastes. All of the documents found in the Third Edition of SW-846, as updated by Updates I, II, IIA, IIB, III, IIIA and IIIB are located at this site. Just click on the appropriate document type at the top of this page, which will in turn take you to a complete listing of the applicable documents and links to each of those documents. For example, in order to locate Method 1311, the TCLP, click on the phrase "1000 Series," which will take you to a listing of the SW-846 methods in the 1000 series.

Drinking Water Methods

The Office of Research and Development, National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) has historically been one of the most active EPA laboratories conducting drinking water methods research. Numerous analytical methods have been written and are available through the NTIS Exit EPA Disclaimer.

Some recently developed analytical methods for drinking water are avaliable for download from the internet. EPA recommends that laboratories interested in using these methods for compliance monitoring check the Federal Register to determine if and when these methods are approved. The methods are presented in Adobe Acrobat ® PDF format.You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view PDF files. See EPA's PDF page for more information about getting and using the free Acrobat Reader.

Marine Water Methods

The online version of METHODS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES IN MARINE AND ESTUARINE ENVIRONMENTAL MATRICES, 2nd Edition (EPA publication EPA/600/R-97/072) is presented in Adobe Acrobat ® PDF format. You may retrieve the entire Manual as a single file (1.6MB) or as individual methods. Inquiries concerning the Manual should be directed to DWmethods.help@epa.gov.
