The Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry , with its primary location in Hilo, Hawaii, is both the title for the research location and for the research program, Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry , of the Pacific Southwest Research Station, headquartered in Albany, California. The location and research station are part of the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.

[Photograph]: mountain and streamThe Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry has been a center of research and technology transfer for matters of management, preservation, and restoration of natural ecosystems and landscapes throughout the Pacific. the Institute's area of responsibility includes seven US affiliated political entities in the Pacific: the State of Hawaii, the Territory of Guam, the Territory of American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau.

EMPHASIS AREAS

The IPIF is a leading research institution addressing many critical natural resource-related issues in the Pacific. To address the broad mission of Institute we are organized into 4 interrelated teams: Restoration, Invasive Species, Wetlands, and Forest Management Services. The primary goals of the first three teams is research development, and applications; the orientation of the Forest Management Service team is delivery of technical assistance, particularly applicable research findings to resource managers and the interested public of the Pacific.

The research program located at the Hilo, Hawaii - Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry conducts research in the broad areas of Ecosystem Processes, with emphasis in tropical ecosystems.
