The Pacific Southwest Research Station has 8 primary sites in California and Hawaii. In earlier years, laboratories and Institutes were usually home to entire research work units (RWUs). Over the years as interdisciplinary approaches in research increased, academic relationships evolved, and the e-world expnded, some RWUs came to conduct work from several locations. Because of this, pages linked from the numbered items on this Locations area are intended to describe the physical location and the Station's history there, with only the briefest overview of connected research. Research information can be had through the RWU links within the paragraphs below, or through the Topics or Programs navigators on the left.
- Redwood Sciences Laboratory, Arcata
The Laboratory serves as the main location for two research units, Cumulative
Effects of Forest Management on Hillslope Processes, Fishery Resources,
and Downstream Environments (RWU 4351), and
Timber Management/Wildlife Habitat Interactions (RWU
4251).
- Silviculture Laboratory, Redding
The Laboratory is located with the main office of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, and is home to the Ecology and Management of Western Forests Influenced by Mediterranean Climate (RWU-4155)
- Institute of Forest Genetics (Historic), Placerville
This historic campus was once the primary home to the research unit of the same name. Now it houses some researchers
from the Institute of Forest Genetics (RWU-4103), as well as the staff of the National Forest Genetics Laboratory (NFGEL), and members of the Chemical Ecology and Management of Forest Insects (RWU-4502).
- Research Facilities, Davis
The Center for Urban Forest Research
(RWU-4952), and the main administrative offices for Institute of Forest Genetics
(RWU-4103), the Chemical Ecology and Management of Forest Insects
(RWU-4502), and the Sierra Nevada Research Center
(RWU-4202) are in several Davis locations.
- Sciences Laboratory and Station Headquarters, Albany
Located with other USDA agency offices, this site serves as the Headquarters for the Station, as well as home to
the Sudden Oak Death Unit (SOD),
the Environmental Statistics Unit (Stat), and researchers from
the Chemical Ecology and Management of Forest Insects (RWU-4502),
and the Sierra Nevada Research Center (RWU-4202)
- Forest Sciences Laboratory, Fresno
This laboratory is a major location for the Sierra Nevada Research Center (RWU-4202)
- Forest Fire Laboratory, Riverside
The Forest Fire Laboratory houses four research work units:
Air Pollution and Global Change Impacts on Western Forest Ecosystems (RWU-4451),
Prescribed Fire and Fire Effects (RWU-4403),
Wildland Fire Management Research, Development, and Application (RWU-4402), and
Wildland Recreation and Urban Cultures (RWU-4902)
- Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry, Hilo
The Intitute of Pacific Islands Forestry is the name for the location as well as the research organization (RWU-4154)
