Question
What gases are found on the planet Mercury?
Mercury is so small (about the size of our Moon) that its feeble gravity can only hold on to a few wisps of gas and solar wind. Like our Moon, Mercury has almost no atmosphere. What little atmosphere exists is made up of solar wind particles (helium and hydrogen ions) and other atoms blasted off its surface by solar radiation (sodium, potassium, and oxygen). Because of Mercury's scorching surface temperatures, these atoms quickly escape into space to be soon replenished by the sun's rays.
