Fire Updates / Advisories / Restrictions / Closures

  • The Picnic Prescribed Fire will be initiated on Thursday, May 7
  • Visitors may see prescribed fire activity along the South Entrance Road and are asked not to stop or park along the road in this area.
  • South Rim Fire Managers will be implementing up to two more prescribed fires on the South Rim within the next 15 days.
  • There are no fire restrictions in effect today.  
  • Roads and facilities on the South Rim are open. 
  • North Rim roads remain closed to vehicular traffic until May 15, 2009 - when the season starts.

The Fire Danger Rating at Grand Canyon National Park is Moderate.

The National Park Service asks visitors and residents to be cautious when dealing with possible sources of ignition. To ensure public safety and to provide the highest degree of protection to park resources, please observe the following regulations:

  • Keep campfires in established fire pits and grills in campgrounds and picnic areas along the rims and in fire pans along the Colorado River.

  • Use an ashtray when smoking.

Did You Know?
The elk found within Grand Canyon National Park weigh as much as 1,000 pounds (450 kg), and have been known to injure people who approach them. Never approach wild animals. It is dangerous, and illegal, to feed the wild animals in a national park. Violators will be fined.
