Says Measure Serves No Purpose Other Than Political Posturing
( Washington D.C.) Congressman Mac Thornberry (TX-13) voted against the House resolution on Iraq, which he described as "political posturing, pure and simple."
The vote came after 4 days of debate on the non-binding resolution that does not have the force of law.
Thornberry emphasized that Iraq and the wider war against radical Islamic terrorists is the preeminent national security challenge facing the country and that Congress has much serious work to do on the issue. "This resolution, however, is not serious. It says we support the troops, but we do not support what they are trying to do."
"Just put yourself in the shoes of those men and women going into battle in Baghdad. Does this resolution encourage you or discourage you? Put yourself in the shoes of those people who do not want stability in Iraq, our adversaries. Does this resolution encourage you or discourage you? Who is helped by this resolution?"
"The troops we send into battle and their families should have no doubt that the country stands with them."
"Success in this struggle will require the best of all of us, including this Congress. We have to put aside the temptation to follow the polls for momentary partisan gain and be serious and thoughtful about our work. This resolution does not do that."
