    What would happen to earth if a planet such as eris comes too close?

    What do you mean “too close”? As long as any errant asteroid of comet does not actually hit the Earth, not much would happen. In the case of Eris itself, of course, it is in the outer solar system on a perfectly stable orbit that will never bring it close to the Earth, so this is not an issue. David Morrison
