Introduction
The Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award uses the K23 grant mechanism to support the career development of clinically trained professionals who have made a commitment to focus on patient-oriented research. The mechanism provides support for up to five years of combined didactic and supervised (i.e., mentored) research to acquire the methodological and theoretical research skills needed to become an independent clinical researcher. K23's are not renewable.
The candidate must have a clinical doctoral degree (e.g., M.D., oncology nurse) or its equivalent, must identify a suitable sponsor (i.e., mentor) who has research experience and who will be responsible for supervising the candidate's research training, must commit to a minimum of 75 percent of a full-time professional effort to the conduct of research and research career development. Candidates holding the Ph.D. degree must be certified to conduct clinical duties, such as a clinical psychologist, clinical geneticist, etc.
Candidate must be a citizen of the United States, or a non-citizen national, or must have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence and possess an Alien Registration Receipt Card (1-151 or 1-551) or some other verification of legal admission as a permanent resident. Foreign nationals and individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible.
The K23 award provides support in the form of salary (up to $75,000 per year plus fringe benefits), research development support (up to $30,000 for expenses such as tuition/fees, books, supplies/equipment, and travel to meetings), ancillary personnel support, and 8 percent facilities and administrative costs (formerly called indirect costs).
