Hate Crimes Bill
The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, H.R. 1913, seeks to provide federal assistance to the states, local jurisdictions, and Indian tribes to prosecute hate crimes, and for other purposes.

Update, 4/29, 5:00 PM: H.R. 1913 Passes 249 to 175

Here are a few of Congressman Rangel's words:

"Crimes fueled by prejudices based on race, color, religion, national origin, gender − as well as sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability − are blots on our nation's moral consciousness and these categories deserve special protections. I am proud to have supported the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 and watched it pass 249-175 in the House this week.

We need to equip our local enforcers with the tools they need to reduce the occurrences of cruel and hateful crimes and accordingly teach our youngsters to respect people of all backgrounds. It is imperative − particularly in these tough times − that we band together as Americans against the forces that seek to divide us."
