Langevin Announces Passage of National Autism Bill

(Warwick, R.I.) Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) celebrated the recent passage of the Combating Autism Act with The Autism Project of Rhode Island this week. The legislation has also passed the Senate.

“I am well acquainted with the issues faced by families of children with this disorder,” said Langevin, a member of the Congressional Coalition for Autism Research & Education, and the uncle of a boy with autism. “We must commit ourselves to providing parents, pediatricians, early childhood educators and all those who have contact with very young children the resources and training to identify children who need help early enough to begin effective interventions."

This legislation contains the following mandates:

  • Doubles National Institutes of Health spending on autism research and directs research regarding the environmental causes of autism
  • Empowers the NIH Director to develop an annual research budget on autism, based on best science, and requires that budget be reported to Congress
  • Creates a screening program in all 50 states for the early identification of children with autism
  • Funds the efforts of the Autism Treatment Network to identify the best medical practices in the treatment of autistic kids
  • Funds the epidemiological and public education programs on autism at the Centers for Disease Control
  • Authorizes nearly $1 billion in federal spending on autism over the next five years to support public awareness, early diagnosis and basic biomedical research
  • “The rapid increase in the number of children diagnosed with autism in the last decade, both nationally and in Rhode Island, is striking,” continued Langevin. “The Combating Autism Act is a tremendous step toward an effective national policy of autism research, screening, intervention and education.”
