LANGEVIN ATTENDS WHITE HOUSE NEW FREEDOM ANNOUNCEMENT

Initiative Aimed at Tearing Down Barriers Facing Americans With Disabilities

(Washington, D.C.)–Congressman Jim Langevin today joined President Bush at the White House as the Administration announced it’s New Freedom Initiative. New Freedom is a series of proposed reforms that are designed to increase accessibility and independence for people with disabilities.

"I am pleased that the new administration has made increased accessibility for people with disabilities an issue of importance," said Congressman Langevin. "I know first hand of the need for changes to be made so that all disabled Americans can lead productive lives. No American, able or disabled, should face physical obstacles to succeed in life."

Bush’s plan focuses upon: increased access to assistive and universally designed technologies; expanded educational opportunities; promotion of home ownership; integrating Americans with disabilities into the workforce; expanded transportation options; and the promotion of full access to community life.

According to the White House, the unemployment rate for Americans with disabilities is approximately 70 percent; homeownership rates are in the single digits and Internet access is half that of those without disabilities.

"The framers of the Declaration of Independence stated that all Americans had the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," said Congressman Langevin. "These rights are also shared by those Americans with disabilities. I will be a strong voice in Congress to see that the barriers that face all Americans are torn down and that a path to progress is cleared."

"I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress to see that life for all Americans with disabilities is greatly improved," added Congressman Langevin.
