W.W. II MEMORIAL DEDICATION Former Governor Sundlun & Representative Panichas to be Langevin’s Guests | |
(Washington, D.C.)–Congressman Jim Langevin today announced that former Rhode Island Governor Bruce Sundlun and Former State Representative George Panichas will be his honored guests as the nation gathers in Washington, D.C. this Sunday for the official dedication of the World War II Memorial. “This memorial is a proper recognition of the men and women who selflessly supported the World War II effort,” said Congressman Jim Langevin, a member of the House Armed Services Committee. “World War II defined the role of the United States in the 20th Century. The men and women who bravely answered the call to duty are truly our “Greatest Generation,” a shining example to all of us about what it means to be Americans. I hope this memorial will remind all Americans of our treasured veterans' spirit, sacrifice and commitment to the American ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” “This memorial will stand as a reminder of the moral strength and awesome power that is possible when a free people are united in a common and just cause,” added Langevin. Former Governor Bruce Sundlun was a B-17 bomber pilot with the Army Air Corps’ 384th Bomb Group based in England. During a mission, Sundlun was shot down over Nazi occupied Belgium. His commendations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Cluster, and a Purple Heart. Former State Representative George Panichas flew over 50 bombing missions in the European theatre as a B-17 tail gunner. He continues his advocacy on behalf of World War II veterans today as a member of the Rhode Island Veterans' Advisory Board. -30- |
