LANGEVIN ACCEPTING ENTRIES FOR CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION

Winner of "Artistic Discovery" to Receive Scholarship to Savannah School of Art and All Expense Paid Trip to Washington, D.C.

(WARWICK, R.I.)-Congressman Jim Langevin today announced that he is accepting entries for his First Annual “Rhode Island Artistic Discovery Art Competition.”  All high school students living in Rhode Island’s Second Congressional District communities are encouraged to submit their artwork for consideration.

Second Congressional District students wishing to submit entries should contact Congressman Langevin's District Office immediately.

In addition to a scholarship to the Savanna College of Art in Georgia and public display of the winning piece in the capitol, the winner of Langevin’s Congressional art competition will receive an all expense paid trip to Washington courtesy of Southwest Airlines; free shipping of the art work courtesy of United Parcel Service; and accommodations at a Washington Hotel.

“This art competition is geared to encourage high school students in Rhode Island to appreciate and practice the arts,” said Congressman Langevin.  “As an industrialized nation, it is important that we focus academic studies on math and science, but we cannot neglect all that the arts have to teach and offer.”

On May 12, in cooperation with New Urban Arts in Providence, Langevin and a panel of judges comprised of members from Rhode Island’s Arts Community will announce the winner of the art competition at an awards dinner for the participants at the Providence Biltmore Hotel.

All entries must be two-dimensional, not exceed 32 inches by 32 inches including the frame and no more than 4 inches in depth.  Due to strict guidelines regarding the display of artwork in Washington, all entries submitted that do not meet the above criteria, will not be eligible for consideration.

“I would like to personally thank Southwest Airlines, United Parcel Service and the  Providence Biltmore Hotel for their generous offers,” Langevin added.

For additional information regarding the art competition, please call Langevin’s Office at 401/732-9400 or log onto www.house.gov/langevin.
